Handmade Difference

Someone took the time to send me a Treasury today.  In this Treasury there are some wonderful handmade bags so, just a few moments, lets take a look at handmade today!

While this item is not a bag, I have to say kudo's to Anna today, as it was she who took the time to ferret out but a few from the hundreds of different and beautifully handmade bags for us to see and share this morning.
If you visit the Creations of True Fairy  you find this paperweight and the lovliest types of unusual handmade jewelry!!

LOOK what Anna found for me to share with you, it a gorgeous handmade reversible tote bag with very rich colors and so very nicely styled and finished.  You may find this reversible tote at the BagLadyBagsLLC.  Here it is showing both views!

Red and white are such great combination colors, this bag will show your fashion sense off beautifully and those long bag straps will fit over the shoulder too!  Truly a practical fashion accessory.

At the Bagitdesigns2 Shop you find this well designed and pretty colored Kindle Cover.

Everyone seems to have a Kindle or a Nook, and if you read your favorite color isn't Blue with beautiful pink flowers then ask for a Custom Order and get exactly what you do like.  Covers such as these keep those e-readers clean and should they fall, the padding of the cover will certainly afford it a bit of protection...

A bag designed just for toddlers is this Kids Toy Tote from the BagLadyFromTheBay ***I have included my shop today as one of my very own pieces was included inside the Treasury, so I am taking the liberty of allowing myself this small concession today!***

I designed these bags for a practical purpose and for children!  Children love having their favorite toys with them no matter where they travel or with who you take them to visit!  Children need to be kept occupied and what better way to occupy them but with their own favorite toys and items they enjoy playing with?  Their own specially selected toys inside their own gran and go bags will keep them occupied for hours on end and when your ready to end your trip or visit, their toys are returned home in their own exclusive bag.

This pretty slim handmade purse was the Treasury too!  Isn't it simply perfect?  It comes from the bagitbeautiful shop!  I just love this designer fabric this bag is made from.  You can carry this bag anywhere with any colored apparel or outer garment, it is right in keeping with todays' fashion trends.

There are any number or shops at Etsy where you will discover gems all handmade just for you, all you need do is create a search for that something special you need, want or wish to give and you certainly will find it at etsy.com!

If like me,  you do not appreciate seeing yourself any time you leave home for the office, the Mall, at a Restaurant, even just at church, then handmade is the real bargain!  Having something you wear or carry that has been handmade makes you just that little bit different from everyone else!   You might find similarities, but it will never be exactly the same as any others!  Being different to me is what it is all about, my style and not something someone dictates I buy that was totally mass produced.  Buying handmade I can ask for a custom order, choose my own style and my own color pallet.

When you purchase something handmade your not just being different but your supporting a small independent business owner.  Remember it is the small business that keeps our economies afloat, so, I challenge you to support a small business today!

****Hey there, have you managed to cast your votes for a fellow Etsy shop?

Vintage Sport a new Fashion Trend

Do you Bowl?  Thought we might go Vintage Bowling today!!

Bowling was very, very popular as a Fall and Winter sport during the 50's right up through the 70's and waned a bit through the 80's and early 90's, but happily the sport is actually making a huge comeback!  It is even a better way to exercise than going to a gym!

With the advent of fall and winter the team spirit of league bowling is an anticipated activity for many.  It's that place you head to once a week to meet up with those friends and acquaintances who enjoy the sport and to interact socially with those friends we haven't been in touch with all summer long!  Bowling is a physical sport that provides much needed and healthy exercise without the need for use of a Gym!  All of your muscles are aching and every joint creeks until the first two weeks have passed and then your back into your fit self, feeling good after a few games and ready to take on the score.

When I went Vintage shopping I actually found some bowling items enough to trigger a walk down Bowling Memory Lane!  There are Etsy Vintage vendors who have managed to find a good number of bowling outfits, shoes and even bowling paraphernalia which might be fun to see today!

As a young woman and at my very first job, I was asked to join the company bowling team!  To my amazement I wasn't half bad, bowled a decent game and ended up owning as much bowling gear as my meager salary would allow.  Like a pair of these bowling shoes?

My shoes were lady Rebels too and I loved them, they were so comfortable on my feet, but were never worn outside of the bowling alley, like the teens do today!  Today these are a fashion statement!   Nope, these were strictly for bowling then!
This particular shoe style can be had through PinpricksPitchfork and these are in excellent vintage condition, actually these look close to brand new!

I kept my personal shoes, shirt, slacks and spray deodorant inside my own Brunswick Bowling bag which was always in the car on the days I was to bowl after work, nice and handy those bags, mine even had a little inside side pocket where I kept my league and pin money!

You can get a Brunswick Bag here at KressHillVintage Shop and this one is a beautiful bag for women its a lovely shade of vintage pink.   Women are toting these around now as personal gym bags, or huge personal weekender bags..

Mind you the men had their own bags too, least ways most of the men who took the game very seriously that is, and this weekender bag (as it was called) seems perfect even today for your bowling equipment...or a weekend suteye flight on a gambling junket, or overnight business trip (without the suit)!
I actually found this bag at a shop called Shopvaluablevintage!  So if you have a man in your circle to buy for this Christmas and that man enjoys bowling this would be a fabulous vintage bag to wrap up for him under the tree, bet you he'd just live it!

Now every one on our League had the same shirt with our team name or sponsors logo printed or embroidered on them, and that was in a way a novel thing to wear!  For myself I always knew someone's name and it allowed me to be noticed too!  So I thought these shirts were terrific ice breakers especially on the singles side of bowling better than doing a bar scene anyday!

My shirt resembled this style of League shirt only mine was Navy and light blue trimmed...this one looks to be in terrific condition for its age, I think mine ended up in the rag bag after many, many years of wear.

This particular vintage bowling shirt was found at GabrielasVintage.  She has some nifty vintage in her shop...

I played in my particular League for nearly 13 years until I married and moved away and never got back to really joining another League, but I remember and still have these types of brooches among my jewelry from time spent in the league and winning some years as high scorer handed out through the years at the Banquets along with those special  Highest scoring Team trophies ...

We'd have all of our pins pinned onto out shirts and what a nuisance to take off every time the shirt had to meet the washing machine!  These were lovingly collected and vied for though and I wouldn't trade mine with all their memories for anything...  This one I actually found at the ButterflyEffectInc shop!  Still this type of brooch is coveted again today as a fashion piece or statement, vintage brooches are all the rage now!

I never did get one of these silky bowling jackets, but I did admire them especially when worn by a member of the opposite sex!  I mean they looked and acted top drawer and usually these were worn by the "Fonz" type of single guys who considered themselves macho!  Most the the Leagues who went on out of town tournaments all wore them.  These jackets were quite an investment for the fellows..

I found this particular jacket at the Plantdreaming shop reminds me of a special fellow on our League and he wore that darned thing as often as he could get away with it!

I know I have been dating myself with this walk down Bowling Memory Lane but honestly, if you want some exercise with some good fun thrown into the mix, go bowling or join a League, it really is a good thing!  Today the young fashion trendy people are wearing whatever they happen to take a fancy to and the bowling gear and clothing is no exception.

SO gran yourself something from the Vintage Bowling scene and go have fun exercising, it's better than those 15 minutes at the Gym...

Insiders

Winter that dreaded cold and bone chilling weather descends upon this part of North America where I live and I always have cold feet.  Having cold feet makes the rest of me feel chilled, but when I put on a pair of slippers and my piggies warm up then the rest of me, myself and I begin to feel warmer too.

Allow me to introduce you to some wonderful hand made foot wear made just to keep your feet toasty warm and comfy and which are uniquely different and which in all honesty I do not believe you will find in any of the brick and mortar shops you frequent!

Aren't these adorable?  It looks like your wearing shoes and your not!  These come from the Nothingbutstring shop and look at these, these designed for men, how absolutely different.

Are you like me, do you prefer that bare foot feeling instead of a thicker soled slipper?  These hand knits will provide warmth and still allow the pleasure of that bare foot on floor feeling.

Everyone knows little tykes love to run around in bare feet too and we all know barefoot is best for infants and toddlers for their proper foot development but we also recognize their feet need to be covered in the winter months to keep the rest of their tiny bodies warm and cosy.  Take a peek at these sweet felted tiny slippers for baby's feet from the Baabaabaxsheep shop!

Felt is a very comfortable way to cover your feet.  After all, felt is wool just re-purposed differently.

I fell for the style and coloring of these hand made felted slippers, I think it is time I got some for myself.  These look so comfy and the colors are bright and cheerful, just the ticket for drab and dreary winter days!

These slippers can be bought at the BaLiVi shop.  These are to my taste, but there are so many other styles made and sold through this shop I am certain anyone can find something their feet would enjoy wearing from this and the hundreds of hand made shop owners at Etsy.

There is a lady in our village that makes felted mittens like these from LucysInspirations

people swear by them and people come from miles around just to buy her mittens because according to them these are the best mittens for retaining warmth while out of doors..her booth at the Christmas Vendors Market is always busy and by the end of her day she is totally sold out.

Felting isn't an easy chore and takes time to perfect but items made using felt are truly treasured.  So if felting can be bragged on for your hands while outside, then felted for your feet would make sense, wouldn't it? Not just as slippers indoors but as book liners for when your outside!

Now at the AimAccessories shop you'll find these wonderful crocheted slip on slippers.  One of my aunts dislikes outside shoes being worn inside her well kept home, so she keeps a box of these crocheted slip on slippers in a variety of foot sizes by the front entryway.  My aunt will say leave your outsiders there and grab a pair of insiders

There are also those types of comfies made from fabric.  Look at these adorable slippers for tiny feet from the Kutsuya shop!  Take a look around this shop and you'll see the a variety of the cutest fabric slippers...such as this pair that I happen to have taken a fancy to.   Are these patchwork slippers for little feet just too cute?
These are but a sampling of the variety of  insiders you can choose from at Etsy.

Etsy is the place I shop, it is also where I have my own shops and it is where you will find a ton of Independent shop owners offering everything handmade to vintage with millions of items to make your choices from.

By the way, have you had a chance to vote for NewMorningGlass today?  This is an Etsy shop in a prestigious competition through Martha Stewart online and they as Etsians can use all of our votes we can give them.  So do me a favor, take a moment if you will and give them your vote... just follow this link and you'll be doing a good turn for an Independent Etsy Shop today!

EDIBLE ART

I saw the sweetest things this morning!

Edible flowers!  Yup, such beautiful flowers that you can actually pull apart and eat, Yum!!

Look at these huge 5" Peonies!

Oh glory, when I first saw them without reading the description I actually thought these were real.  These are so genuinely garden like perfect.  Now mind you you can only get these in the united Kingdom by AlegraSugarFlowers, because as every knows (or should know) edibles home made are not really exportable across the wide ocean to North America - what a shame for us over here!  BUT, for those of you readers in the UK this is such a beautiful treat - if your having a gala event or a wedding these are absolutely to die for on your cake or, table settings, imagine the look on your guests faces when you advise them to taste the floral arrangements!  What fun that would be!

OH but don't despair because we here in North America have edibles too! Take a look at these gorgeous toppers, these are exquisite!

Straight from incrEDIBLEtoppers in Toronto, Canada!  Imagine being able to eat a hummingbird and have it melt in your mouth!  Sweet!

LittleHopeCakes from the United States has these perfect autumn colored leaves and a Monarch butterfly
for anyone who is celebrating the advent of this coming Fall or having an Autumn Wedding!  Perfect for the upcoming Thanksgiving table.  Your family and guests will be amazed your allowing them to actually eat the decorations!  What memorable fun!

Lets not forget Halloween is on its way and what better than eyeballs for the kids to have at a Halloween party or just as a creepy fun way to celebrate the hallowed eve of dress up fun!  Can't you just hear a little one saying to mum and dad "guess what I ate?  An Eyeball!"  Yikes how fun would that be?

The precision and artistry of the individual making these delectable sugar decorations needs to be applauded because it is a fine art all of its own to manage these delicate blossoms, leaves and aviary treats and so honest to goodness lifelike too!  Take those Halloween eyeballs, aren't they super?

I so enjoy good art be it hung on a wall, set on a table or edible like those I have shared with you today!  Art is art and the fact that this type of artistry can be eaten makes it so much fun and worthwhile trying out.  The sheer pleasure of eating something so beautiful and delicious makes the whole experience a special and memorable treat!

SUPPLIES

You know your getting old when your baby turns 40!!!   So a Very HAPPY DAY to my 40 year old.....

Etsy began and remains a more or less a hand made based platform for small craft bsuiness owners to sell hand made and hand crafted products from.

As a crafter and a small business owner, I rely on other small business owners to sell me the supplies I need for my craft and without them.  These shops make it easy for me to continue doing what I do best and still buy what I need from right here in my own domain!

Today I would like to introduce you to but a very few of the hundreds of suppliers at Etsy.  A small business thrives when the supplies they use to make their items are the best of quality and because we want the best for our customer base we buy from those we trust to sell us the best there is to be had.

Because my shop sells fabric items lets look at a few suppliers I w\found to share with you today.

TAKE ZIPIT for some of the best zippers I have ever used for my quality quilted bags.  The variety of sizes and colors are wonderful...

The variety of zippers is vast!  One of the line of extra large zippers I buy goes into an item which features children.  Children need to be safeguarded and so when I use this particular zipper I know I am using the best and that their tiny fingers won't be hurt when they use my product.

Trims are also important to seamstresses and sewists (using a word I read in the forums the other day!) there are trims, buttons, embellishments, laces, threads, linings, stabelizeers, batting and so much more of my craft type items being sold through Etsy supply shops that I need not spend time and money running around to buy what I believe I need.

At LaceFun wonderful trims can be purchase in the line of lace and rhinestone embellishments and much more.  The variety this shop sells is wonderful! Like this beautiful silver bridal lace!

or this Swarovski Crystal Applique which is too beautiful!  Wonderful for those who sew for Brides or Christenings, First Communions, Evening gowns, what a boon to have found just what you need and all here in front of your computer.

I use a great deal of buttons and twill in my crafts, the buttons in my line of crafting are for my t-towels I make and give to seniors every Christmas because my seniors love my type of towels.

Here are some I love to use and I actually discovered these at the Little Red Cottage!  Buttons, who doesn't love buttons and some of the best variety I have seen, as I said, I use buttons for crocheted topped t-towels I give at Christmas time.  These finish my towels perfectly.

I just love the large buttons with loads of good color because I know my seniors can easily manipulate the button.

Who doesn't love polka dots?  Look at this variety of colors!

There is a larger variety of buttons to choose from and each shop keeper has their own customer base and know what their customers want, so check around, you'll definitely find what it is your seeking at Etsy Supply Shops.

TWILL is an important feature in many of the bags I make and I can purchase that as well from the Little Red Cottage.

With Halloween right around the corner many who sew love to make treat baggies for the little trick or treaters, well look at this fabric I found at
OmasFabricandGifts!  "I love the name Oma because that is what we call our grannies in Dutch)

This fabric is adorable for treat bags.

I personally love this south western fabric.
There is a large selection of juvenile novelty print for children of all ages......

Wearing my shoppers hat I find that shopping right here in my own home wonderful, the variety of shops who sell supplies to crafters such as myself are varied and many, in fact I could spen a wekk just shopping for supplies in my hobby line....no dealing with gas prices, no having to worry about the weather or even getting dressed, I can do all of my shopping online at Etsy and know full well I am going to get exactly the quality I want.

Shop keepers who sell supplies for crafting are special shop keepers, where in the name of sanity do they keep all  of the inventory they carry?    These supply vendors know their customer base and strive to sell nothing but the best.

Speaking only for myself, I am grateful they are here for me!

One tiny favor to ask of you, I wrote about New Morning Glass in yesterdays' post and if you would like to help a fellow Etsian Artisan, then take a few moments and go and cast some votes for them.  They've been nominated in the Wildcard category of Martha Stewarts' competition.  read all about it here. Take a moment and vote for them, our votes may go a long way in helping them to win.  Not just win, but possibly responsible for creating another job for some one who needs it.

When you make the choice to shop at the establishments of small business everywhere, you not only help small business,  but your money helps local economies to remain stable and also to grow.   Small business is the backbone of any prosperous nation, so help your economies, shop small business today!

APPLAUSE, Please?

Allow me if you will,  to introduce you to New Morning Glass, owned and operated solely by Mary Kernan and Jack Doebler, glass blowers.  A short version of their history can be found here .   Possibly you know this Glass Blowing duo already, or if you do not know of "them" you have seen or purchased one or more of their products, and for those who have not met them yet, they make hand blown glass Jewelry, Stained Glass and Door Knobs for your doors and cabinets like these pictured below....

Mary and Jack hand make not only beautifully exquisite glass and hand blown pieces, but have managed to make a niche for themselves and opening their shop at Etsy with their practical and beautifully crafted glass door knobs!   They also sell the specially designed hardware for those crafted knobs.  Convince yourself any one of these wouldn't be a gorgeous enhancement to your doors and cabinets.

New Morning Glass began its life selling hand blown glass door and cabinet knobs at Etsy in 2011 and now brings them to 2014 and their entry nomination as one of the "Wildcard" finalists in the Martha Stewart American Made Summit Competition,  for best of the Hand Crafting and Hand Made product shops across America!  KUDO's to Mary and Jack!

According to the Rules of this competition finalists,  all 800 of them were chosen by Martha Stewart and juries, and,  an additional 200 shops through the People's Choice section of the competition.  From this huge cross section of shops who make their products only 9 winners will be decided on through a Jury and one winner alone based on the amount of votes it receives from the "people" that means you and me, all of us can vote foe a winner in this Category!!!

Martha Stewart states........ Since our earliest days as a company, we have celebrated artisanal initiative, local provenance, and creative entrepreneurialism. With American Made, we honor and support a growing population of those makers who create beautiful and useful products, pioneer new industries, and improve their local communities.
This is in its own way a very important, prestigious and exciting contest.  It showcases SMALL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS!
How very exciting it is then to discover an Etsy Artisan business being chosen to be representative of small business too!  Especially exciting because I am also an Etsy Small business owner.  I am so proud that small business who sells on Etsy is being showcased, in the long run it also helps me!

Small business people operating shops at Etsy are contributors in the economic market place and while not all are able to create jobs, at least they support their local economies and assisting in job losses, while statistics probably won't confirm my opinion, I truly believe Etsy Hand Made Crafters are large contributors to many other huge corporate enterprises,  if only for the fact that many of their supplies for their craft comes from sources which employ other people. A very huge circle which is inclusive in many ways to prosperity.   Since the Great Depression Era, it has always been the small business which have held the economies together.

In this case a Small Business which sells at Etsy has a chance to become a winner and earn the prestige as Hand Made Hand Crafting Small Business Entrepreneurs!  This then is my reason for showcasing only one shop today!

To those who read my blog,  will you join with me and invest a few moments of your day until this competition is final to vote for one of our own? ************** IF WILLING TO VOTE then here is the vote link!****************you  may have to join, I did join and I clicked on the vote now link in the bottom right hand corner of the New Morning Glass competitor page.

Who knows, possibly next year it may be another small business which operates at Etsy chosen in this small hand made business competition and we would then hope for as much support as we can muster.

Button it Up!

Hey there, it's Wednesday - sorry for missing yesterday, but an emergency reared its ugly head.

I am not a seamstress nor a knitter, I can crochet some, but not with expertise, however, I can and do appreciate the role beautiful buttons play in the finishing touch of a garment or sweater coat, even a crocheted dress.  Thinking of fashion and of those talented people who design and make their own clothing either for personal wear or to sell, buttons usually make the garment into a star when it is finished with the right hardware!  Buttons I consider to be the jewels which add just the right touch!

These and hundreds of other beautiful buttons may be found  right here at Etsy.  The shop owners with their skill at identifying the material of a button are talented, it takes a keen sense of fashion to know a good button when they see it.  Offering it for sale is just as special because many women love to hoard buttons because of their beauty alone.

LIKE these Depression era glass buttons!!

Genuine glass from the Depression era and not easily found anymore!  I found these at Add Vintage. This shop carries more than just this pretty array of Depression Glass, but these reminded me of the beautiful carnival and cafe glass dishes I so love.

THEN at Sewly Buttons, (Uniquely named shop for buttons wouldn't you say?) I spied these pretties, which to me are just the cats pajamas when it comes to Depression Glass, their that shade of soft pastel green.

I realize I shouldn't, but I am always amazed at the beautiful finds through Etsy shops.  Shop owners really know value when they see it and these buttons are no exception.

Over at Baubles Buttons I found these gorgeous blue glass buttons, I love this color which simply sparkles.

Now not all beautiful buttons are Depression Glass, but other beauties were made from other resources, such as these spectacular Czechoslovakian Glass buttons like jewels!

I found these stunners over at the Bling Stash Shop.

Then I actually found Antique glass buttons being sold.  Being so very different as to make them special!  With their different shape these would make a wonderful addition to something you are making for that someone special and need it finished with just the right button!
I found them and so can you at the Suz Balla shop.  Aren't these just super?

THEN I found these Black Glass with Gold Luster buttons at the Sew Old Sew New shop.  What a fantastic finish to a garment these would make!  Definitely Runway fashion buttons!

Someone might notice the fashion garment, but they will be pulled to it by the mere fact that these buttons are fastened to it.  The finish of the garment is what makes it more noticeable.

Buttons from days long ago were made from a vast variety of materials, but glass is still one of my all time favorites.

Dr. Who?

WHO is Dr. Who?????  The latest trending tv series from the United Kingdom is making a cult following once again, and in that vein, fashion is also trendily following along.

Dr. Who Sci-fi geeks are loving this cult style of fashion trending vintage clothing items.  You are going to see more and more men out and about wearing double breasted styled neutral shaded trench coats over pin striped suits with bow ties and comfortable vintage leather shoes, everything more or less from the 60's and 70's.

Etsy Vintage shops offer all of this and much more!

Take this Natural Tan colored Trench Coat from TwigandSpokeVintage!  If you have a Dr. Who cult follower this will make the perfect Christmas gift for him this year.....

At CreativeSparksies you can actually get this "Dr. Who fashionable dress!  The style is absolutely retro and absolutely Dr. Who!!!!

According to my 20's+ niece, this color combination and the Dr. Who trend is all the rage, coming out in a variety of fashionable ways.

Then you'll find this "The Fifth Dr." the protagonist, spectacular the 5th Dr. inspired white with red trim Cricket Sweater at ThePaisley5Vintage shop!

Or, this Dapper Baroque Tan Bow Tie from bowterfly in true Dr. Who fashion?

OR, a beautifully crafted and hand made four pocket and double breasted styled bespoke/steam punk vest from Once Upon A Bustle too cool and so Dr. Who!!

Add a custom made cravat from Queenoflace and he will be all set!

Women love jewelry and with Dr. Who those women will just adore this Gallifreyan Translator from Android Sheep FTW, simply a stunning piece with all of its Dr. Who connotations!

Or a pair of Tardis earrings from BohemianCraftsody and she is also ready to travel through time seeking the elusive Dr. Who!

Fashion is not always dictated by Paris,London or NewYork, no, sometimes fashion follows a cult of something beyond the runway!

Who could have imagined back in the early 60's, when at the request of the BBC to its staff writers to dream up a Science Fiction series for airing then would over the past fifty years develop a cult following, something like that which happened with "The Last Picture Show" and Too Foo Young!  Imagine Dr. Who has been running through time for over 50 years now and from all accounts is making a new generation love his quirkiness all over again.

Once again the shop owners at Etsy are here in the forefront with trending items for those seeking that "got to have" item....
