NEW LIFE - NEW PURPOSE

With the arrival in my modest mobile home of another person I soon had to develop a more stringent outlook to the storing of personal belongings. How to do this in an environment already tightly crammed with "stuff" makes one become more inventive, but how to do this was giving me a huge headache!

So I have turned to the inventive entrepreneurs who seem well equipped and armed with fantastic ideas on how to re-purpose something from the past which seemingly was left behind or thrown away and change the way I thought by making some someone, somewhere thought no longer needed and turn it back to being useful and productive once again.

TAKE Modernarchaeology1  wow what nifty storage solutions and recycling ideas this shop owner has!   These units can be had one by one or a multiple of units to make this type of storage possible and very reasonably priced for the budget conscious consumer.

THIS old locker from RusticRealm is just the ticket for additional storage in that it is made from metal, it has 6 clear door fronts to each compartment making for a good visual and its depth can accommodate many personal items in a bathroom, or, a students bedroom, a sewing room, evening in the mudroom!  If your not into the industrial look of this type of cabinet a coat of metal paint will certainly make it look attractive in any space you've designated it's usefulness to serve!  I love it, it is tall and narrow with a large re-purpose factor going and it would fit right into my tiny home!

Truthfully I never considered industrial cabinetry as having a place in a home, however over the past twenty years the notion of industrial has become innovative and "old" industrial metals such as what this cabinet is made of really makes sense.

Again, a coat of metal rust proofing paint will make this useful cabinetry fit in any pace and take a look at the space it has.  I could use this as a cupboard to store my preserves and canned goods in, or, to hold fabrics in my sewing area, even in the computer room or area.  It would hold a the actual computer hardware, printer, paper, ink cartridges, software, test books, manuals, in a computer area alone. There are a multitude of ideas which come to mind in which this type of cabinet may be made useful once again.  Thanks to ModonMain this now has the opportunity to serve a new purpose as well as being reasonably priced!

I don't know about your kitchen, but many seniors as well as couples, singles, students live in downsized units and there is never enough kitchen storage for the way we live.  When I saw this unobtrusive sized wall unit I thought how it would serve my purposes in my tiny bathroom.  It would hold a variety of items a bathroom is always inundated with and free up additional space in my vanity shelving as I simply do not have drawers and this little cabinet would serve a very important purpose for the way my home is set up.
When Etsy shopping I spied this perfect sized unit.  With it being made of a heavier gauge of plastic it would really withstand the humidity of a bathroom during showers and bath times!
You can see it at öpping!

It makes sense to reuse items and keeping them from landfill is agreeable to me as well as being inexpensive solutions to storage problems.  These units of the past will serve you and others for years to come and by re-purposing your also becoming an environmentalist and making a difference to our precious planet.

Today is the last Saturday before the commencement of school here in my area so while my student is off on her very first shopping expedition in Canada I am off to catch up on my reading.

BETWEEN THE COVERS

Everyone loves hearing a great story and there is nothing more rewarding than to hear a child ask for a bedtime story, or to see a child become excited as well as enthralled with the latest adventure he or she is reading in between the covers of a book.

I became passionate about literature when I was introduced to "Mother Goose Nursery Stories" while still very young through my father who was an avid reader and as I grew, taught me to read and while reading I learned to travel the world and experience adventures while sitting still with a book.

The tales and adventures of other young people provided me with an exciting way to use my imagination and to expand my comprehension and reading as well as spelling skills.  Reading made me a better student, taught me to respect other cultures as well as to appreciate the values and opinions of other people who I may or may not have agreed with, but, appreciated their right to voice such different information, ideas and opinions.

So it is with classic literature written by authors with an eye to the developing mind of a child, Authors such as:

Robert Louis Stevensons' classic tale of "KIDNAPPED" from The Creative Hearth

What young boy can resist the story of how a young man used his ingenuity and be fortunate enough to have met others to help him save himself from a very sad and nasty situation?  This is a tale once read never leaves the reader no matter how old you've grown.

Who of you can forget  "DAVID COPPERFIELD" by Charles Dickens?  I remember I cried my way through some of the chapters of this classic tale. Thought by many to be the closest rendition of what may have been a Dickens Biographical..FrenchToastKitty has it in their shop along with many other good reads...

Nearly everyone who came from the 1950's and 1960's  remembers their favorite books, of reading the trials and tribulations of  "BOBBSEY TWINS" all written under the pseudonym of  Laura Lee Hope!  Tails of two sets of familial twins and endless shenanigans they managed to get up to and discovering they'd a mystery on their hands to solve, like The Smoky Mountain Mystery or The Mystery At Snow Lodge, and endless other accounts of mysteries they managed to solve.... these books made a young childs' mind active in anticipating how they may have solved the mystery or to think about solving a puzzle...

A gift of such a book or books to a 6 to 9 year old is a gift they may never forget!  These wonderful childhood stories may be found over at Jackobees Books.

As a preteen I became enthralled with books like "ANNE OF GREEN GABLES" and the "CHRONICLES OF AVONLEA" written by Lucy Maude Montgomery! Brought back to renewed fame and to the delight children in the 21st century by the world of television.  I could never wait until school work was finished to go back to reading all the worrisome trials Anne managed to get herself into and more or less grew up with Anne!  These wonderful books as well as other Lucy Maude Montgomery titles can still be bought to keep and treasure at Greenfield Books.  I still have my one copy I received when I was 12 from my Aunt Rose with her presenting inscription on the front fly leaf....that means it is a very old copy of a beloved story!

Do you remember "NATIONAL VELVET" written by Enid Bagnold?  We all remember the title of the book, but I had forgotten the Author's name!
There are hardly any children who do not love a story about a horse and no matter boy or girl, they will all be rooting for National Velvet to WIN!!!  This classic can still be had to be added to a Childs Literature Collection or as an addition to a collection you might begin for a newly welcomed child in your family...What grandparent doesn't enjoy reading to a child and seeing their eyes opening with wonder as passage after passage unfolds with new and exciting exploits, trials, tribulations and ultimate triumph over some form of adversity.   On a bookshelf at Anemone Reads Vintage.

No parent, elder sibling, family member or friend can be in the wrong for buying a child a book, a book will not break, a book excites, a book inspires and teaches and more than ever has a moral to it...when you teach a child to read today you are inspiring a Future Leader of tomorrow.

I can see this beautifully designed Art Deco evening bag on the Red Carpet in the hand of Cameron Diaz!  If you head on over toe The Refined Ruffian you will spy this beauty waiting for someone tall and chic to show it off....this is absolutely stunning!

We know every woman needs at the very least one stunning little black bag to go along with that wonderful classically designed black dress!  A black bag will take you anywhere, at any time for any event (almost any event)!  This is a classic, it comes out of the 1950's when Audrey Hepburn and Princess Grace Kelly were setting the fashion scenes!

ON THE MOVE

Like nearly 99% of the female population I love shoes and handbags and only they had been my size I wouldn't be telling you about them in case you beat me to the check out!

I am such a sucker for stylish Italian Leather shoes, just take a look at these 1970's beauties from honeytalkvintage!  These 1970's two colored leather pumps, made in Italy!   Just imagine how soft and luxurious your feet would feel in these delightful all leather crafted shoes?  The colors are what drew me to them, sadly these are not my size!

As is the case with this next pair of shoes, if these were my size, I would keep the information to myself until I could slap my money down and have them all to myself, but, such is not the case so I will share these with you...
From StyleandSalvage these stylish two style leather with "kitten" pump heels are just the color and style for fall and as to comfort, I just bet the feet that fit into these will be cloud walking!  Just the proper shoe for a full work day at the office and these will even take you out to supper after your work day is through.

Another pair and again these are Italian, see, these just jump out in front of me, must be something in the air, Italian Leather, you can't beat it!  These are lovely, just perfect for any occasion you choose to wear these for, these will fit in anywhere.  These look so demure with that wonderful crafted leather toe Bow, now tell me can you not see your feet in these shoes walking down the fashion Runway?
These two toned pretties are from libbysfabric - these are shoes with style and grace! Of course these are Salvatore Ferragamo shoes...

These next shoes are the classic of Classics!!  No matter what color this style of shoe is designed in their almost irresistible!  Unfortunately I am not certain these are Italian leather, but who cares, these are the be all and end all of class in fashion...These walking down the street say "hey take a good look at me!".  When I see these shoes I see Merel Streep or Glenn Close in these shoes, oh, don't I wish I had their legs and beautiful ankles....men tend to notice the shoes coming toward them and their eyes take it from there...These can be found at JandVaddicted and once again these are not my size!!!

Thanks for walking through the years with me in these shoes!  Least in my mind these are my feet being a tourist and walking in any one of these styles down a Parisian street, mm mmmmmm mmmmmmmmm!

CHINESE THEMED

I will explain a little later why today is full of excitement and even a bit of trepidation for me...but first, lets look at this beautiful handmade Chinese fan!
I found this at sunriseinparadise!  A most beautifully constructed and hand painted fan and stunning piece of home decor.  I know I could not master the skill in which it took to make this beautiful fan can you?

Another room decor idea is the use of small hand painted plates from China, can you just imagine the delight seeing these each time you walk into the room where you have chosen to place them?  These are magnificent!
I found these at TONITIQUES

I realize Chinese design isn't for everyone, but every once in awhile, something grand and glorious is unearthed and when you see it you just have to have it, these plates make me want them.

More Chinese flair with these Chinese Shallow bowls for dim sum or for dipping sauces?  These are the ticket to have when entertaining some evening using a Chinese theme for you and your guests....how nice to have these at the ready for a variety of sauces your serving.  These come from VIVALSVINTAGE
aren't they just super?  Your guests are certain to appreciate your style.

Nothing goes better with food from China than to drink Chinese tea served from an authentic Chinese Tea set.  Chinese tea is instrumental in assisting your digestive system and is non-filling and it also cleanses the pallet.  I found this beautifully crafted Tea set at MusicCityTeas      It is a set with its own special design and uniquely attractive.  This set even comes with its own serving tray...and if not for an evening gathering of friends and Chinese food then an afternoon after a shopping expedition relaxing with Chinese tea.

My choice of Chinese today is in anticipation of a young lady coming all the way from Chine to stay the whole school year.  It is exciting in that neither she nor I have met  because she will arrive today after a grueling nearly 30 hours travel from her home just to get here so she may attend a Canadian school.  I have been busy this week getting her room ready in anticipation of her arrival today.

ECLECTIC TABLE SETTINGS

The mornings are changing, a certain scent is in the air, it is becoming cooler and geese can be heard making their way southward for their winter migration to warmer climates...which means that the harvests will be in, canning and preserving are in full swing and children will be returning back to the classrooms and the trees are beginning to show their new colors of golds, rusts, brilliant apple greens and sparkling golds before losing their magnificance and turning a dull shade of gray or brown!
This has got to be the advent of Fall, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, the day when the table is laden not only with the feasts of the summer harvest, but surrounded with family and friends, football and lively conversations.
Mixing it up this year might fun! Imagine dressing the table with mismatched table settings, Pfaltzgraff here, amber glasses, etc. what fun!  No stress table setting and the possibility of evoking fond memories of Thanksgivings' past!

Wouldn't it be fun to set the table with some real Vintage this Thanksgiving?
For instance, what of these Pfaltzgraff  salad plates in blue and from TsEclecticCorner

Classic country, vintage lending a flair of the late 1950's early to mid 1960's with these Amber glasses from Jeniyesterday!

Of course, the entree being the center of attention is the star attraction of the day!  Plates are to be laden with all that scrumptious food you've been preparing and a large dinner plate is what is needed to hold all that great food. Why not place this bright and cheerful set from VictorianRehabDesign with its golden yellow on white design ten (10") inch dinner plates in front of everyone?

Makes for an exciting followup, a variety of color accompanying a variety of delicious foods, to fill all those hungry tummies just waiting for turkey and the trimmings and can't wait to begin eating?

Laughter and chatter during each course and each with a different color, shape or design.  Changing up the table ware from years long ago might evoke some interesting questions and conversations about the "olden" days!  Possibly your mother had such a set but not enough pieces anymore to use at the dining table, but what fun if you mixed it up, or used  old fashioned glasses to hold the favored libation, coupled with interesting flatware like this set from Daisyrootsfrance !

Setting a miss matched table with all sorts of table ware from years past seems like a fun and different way to entertain the guests at your table on Thanksgiving Day, or, any event where your serving multiple courses of fantastic food.

More and more people are turning to the preparation and eating of good foods, getting together to share in the culinary exploits with the tableware setting the tempo and inviting lively conversations of "do you remember" all good entertaining conversations while enjoying the feast of the season!

FOR THE MEN IN YOUR LIFE

Our summer, such as it was this year is nearly over and when it finishes it will open up a new attitude in clothing fashions  for the coming Fall and Winter seasons ahead!

Our little ones will be returning to school, then Thanksgiving and before you know it along comes Christmas and if we are totally social some wonderful events in between.

I notice women and girls have all the luck!  We have scads and scads of clothing and accessories to choose from, but the choices for men seem a bit on the lop side of the fashion scene, or so it seemed until I began searching around Etsy.  I never really considered just how many shops there are that cater to men and the fashions trends for men.

Men are becoming quite the fashion horses are they not?  Etsy has hundreds of shops to help them become and remain well dressed for any time of the day, night, occasion or event!

Take this Vintage suit from the 1930's!  Classically designed in the 1930's but looks as dapper on this young man today in 2014.  See how handsome he makes the suit look by revamping how he wears it and the accessories put together to go with it making this young fellow look rather dashing, wouldn't you agree?
This is a double breasted, three button vintage suit which can easily take its place anywhere in forthcoming seasons not just the remainder of the year but well into the future...over at nanascottagehouse you can discover this suit among other wonderful vintage wear, minus this young man, of course!

The making of a mans' attire are clean hands and fingernails, a smart tie, but what people seem to notice after the suit walks in are his shoes!

Vintage shoes sport a style all their own and in my opinion were made for foot comfort!  I remember my father and brothers wouldn't wear anything but leather, leather meant a comfortable day, sturdy and wearable for years!

These Allen Edmonds Loafers from CompanyMan are just the ticket!  They look extremely well made and were well cared for!  Sturdy, well designed leather loafers in that Oxblood color will take a man from day into evening wear without difficulty.
These may be vintage but they look new.
Heads definitely will bend to examine these handsome shoes!

With the advent of fall and winter which season we know is just around the corner, we know nothing looks better than a boutonniere in a mans lapel.

We all know flowers do not do well in cold weather, they just wilt quickly and after an hour it isn't a wilted flower a man wants hanging on his chest!
He needs a facsimile!  Something real and fresh looking that will take him to more than just one function!  Look what MellysBow has to offer in the way of Flowers for mens' lapels!  Handmade beautiful Boutonniere's, these surely won't wilt.

There is nothing spiffier than a well dressed man!  He stands out no matter where he is,  when he feels great about how he looks in his well made suit, solid comfort shoes on his feet and a dapper flower in his lapel I bet that man enjoys himself the whole day through.

It has been years since I actually thought about men and their clothing, but lately I see men dressing in a way that looks completely effortless.

Fashions for men can be found at Etsy, vintage to new, classic in design because those who sell for men keep abreast of the latest and upcoming fashion trends.  It is their business to have just about anything a fellow believes he may need to look dressed in a fashion he perceives himself to wear.  He can choose everything from socks to cuff links, ties and bow ties, belts and belt buckles, hat to caps and everything in between.

Be it a necessity or be it a gift for that man or men in your life, whatever it is you'll find it in Etsy shops.

NOSTALGIA IN BLACK AND WHITE

I tend to watch documentaries on television, especially those that delve into the past, and when I see vintage photographs in sepia or black and white,  they tug at my heart strings.  Sometime I wonder about the people in the photograph, who were they, what did they do, what would they think of Society and the surge of technologies today?

I found this beautiful touching photograph over at dawnandross, these two girls are friends!  From the looks in their eyes, they're filled with contemplation of that moment, knowing it will be frozen in time to keep forever that bond between them.
I would love to have this photograph, even not knowing who these girls were or are, they'd allow me to ponder the mystery of who they were and what became of them.

Now this photograph from the 1930's can be had from girlcatdesign and it is filled with question marks for me, were these young fellows farmers, or lumbermen?  They look like a group of fellows who worked together, were they best friends?  Were they a family of brothers?  Look at the clothes they wore, one fellow even had on a suit and a tie, was he in charge?  ah questions, these old photographs pose so many questions...

Over at gwensewvintage I actually found a picture that evoked a vivid memory of my darling other-in-law Jean.  She and her friends and neighbors would save up the whole year, then book a trip to Galway (Ireland), in the 1940's to buy for their families at Christmas time, sometimes lucky enough to scoot back across the border without having something confiscated, or be forced to pay duties on their meager purchases.  This picture reminded me of her and the stories she told about those excursions, and a sit down with a cuppa was one of the best parts of the day before boarding the bus home.  While they sat with their teas catching their breath the women always had a wee chat.

And last, I found this one at TheGlamourist.  Who doesn't love to see old street scenes?  I love these, there are hundred of things to identify and wonder at, it really wasn't so long ago and the leap of how changed and different I bet that City is today!  That photo much be a 1920's or early 1930's don't you think?

Thought provoking old photographs, conjuring up all sorts of thoughts and questions of days well before our time, the fashions, the settings, the times when people went out and about, no i-phones stuck to their palms, or earphones stuck in their ears.  LOL

THE ROMACE OF LACE

Skill in interpreting your design is a masterful skill, how creative minds manipulate fabrics and turn their creative ideas into things we all want to wear and use...

WHEN I saw this necklace from The Whirlwind I fell in love!  It is creative, it uses my favorite medium, "fabric" and finishes it off with romantic lace!  Truth told, I have never in my travels seen a necklace like this one - something you wear around your neck and actually has lace and is deemed to be a "necklace"!  How creative and unique is that?

Lace is something I think of as being eternal, it is delicate, it is minute stitches of open worked fabric, it speaks its' own language!  Who doesn't see the beauty in lace?  Lace seems synonymous with weddings, christenings and Queen Elizabeth I!  Least ways that is how I tend to think when I see Lace.  It is the vintage hand made lace that is intriguing.
Lace has the ability to tell a story, historically, speaking Queen Elizabeth I wore lace endlessly.  Lace is like a shadow, revealing and yet concealing, and really very sexy!

I spied this queen like styled lace wedding dress at The Vintage Mistress, a 1950's lace creation which made me think Regal, something fit for a Queen or a princess.  Now this being a vintage gown had me thinking that Bride who first owned and wore this dress on her wedding day, must have looked and felt just as if she were a Princess about to be crowned a Queen in this glorious lace!

Christenings are all about tradition and lace is a true tradition.  Sometimes just a hint of tradition,  like in a baby's Christening gown, such as this handmade gown. It is simply beautiful?

Over at IrishChristening I found this absolutely very special Irish Linen and Lace hand made Christening Gown.  Who doesn't envision their baby being christened in such a gown?  The picture even has the christened babe sleeping peacefully on a crocheted lace throw/blanket....

Lace, the historical fabric that speaks a language all its' own, so stunning so sexy, so romantic, so remarkable, so beautiful it speaks.

WEARABLE ART VINTAGE JEWELRY

I LOVE Vintage Jewelry, it had classic design styles, colors and forms.

THIS MORNING I happened across this beautiful brooch, then kept on wandering through different shops to see what else there was to find.  I found these and more, these happened to be my favorites today.

I found some beautiful pieces of descriptive art works in jewelry and barely scratched the surface of shops that carry distinctive eye popping hand made wearable art works.

LOOK at this beautifully colored and designed original enameled fish brooch with rhinestones from gioart!  This fish looks ready to make the high jump.  Its beautifully formed tail all fanned out in deep royal blue and tinged with gold and its splendorous turquoise fins neatly splayed and taking it somewhere.  The colors simply glorious and well coordinated together.   Not expensive by any stretch of the word and positively eye catching! (no pun intended) Beautiful for a brooch...Your sure to get noticed wearing this beautiful piece of "old" jewelry...Sadly this store seemingly is not there anymore!

As my search continued I found somethings I dearly would love to own and to wear on any given day with or without an event to show it off at, it is Native American Turquoise hand made and usually with silver as its accent.  There really is not finer than pieces made by Navajo Native Indians from an era we won't see again, they're pieces have love carved into them, they are timeless in their individual beauty and allow the turquoise to speak it's magical language to everyone.

This stunner is for sale at ShinePrettyGems once again to own and wear a piece of American Native Navajo culture it is not expensive.  See the beautiful craftsmanship in the rings silver and how it allows the stunning piece of turquoise to shine!

One more beautiful piece of turquoise with silver as its backdrop.  This pretty can be bought from Odona.  This ring is an oval cabochon of marbleized turquoise surrounded with silver allowing the stone to speak for itself. Majestic in its simplicity!  Again, it is Vintage Navajo made long ago and really very inexpensive.

Both of these shops have excellent taste in the pieces they have chosen to represent their shops and each shop sells Vintage wearable art in the form of jewelry.

Hmmm,  wonder if my Santa or my family is keeping track of things I would love to see come out of wrapped Christmas parcels???

Are you like me?  Do you enjoy wearing art from the past?  I get a kick out of being different and my choices of art that gain compliments make my day.  Any one of these pieces will do that.  Each shop has different and unique pieces of wearable vintage art, made by individuals who seemingly enjoyed their craft, who seemed to pack each piece with a bit of their soul.

WHAT does turquoise Navajo Jewelry do for you?

TIMEPIECES

Look what I found this morning!

Absolutely perfect in every sense, to my way of seeing this hand crafted time piece, it reminds me of a beautiful peacock.  It is one of many, all hand made and so very interesting.  This one just happens to move me.  Every household needs a clock in their spaces.

This particular clock is sublime!  It sparkles with its gold and turquoise!  It really does make me think of a Strutting Peacock.  Simply beautiful!

If you feel the need of a new clock, or just want to see the variety of wall time pieces,  head on over to see what other offerings Janice Johnson has made!  Her shop name is makingtimetc

Most every where you visit outside of your living space has a clock!  I don't think there are places you visit without a clock, (other than a Casino) where you will not see the face of a clock somewhere in those surroundings, like for instance a restaurant, a bowling alley, a school room, the boardroom, an office, an airport, the library, a hospital, etc.!

Have you ever taken notice that wherever you see clocks on a wall that just about all of them differ and vary in styles, shapes and sizes!
I notice wall clocks, I am one of those people who have always noticed a variety in wall clocks, some are HUGE and some are average and some downright small,  all of course are interesting to me. Not necessarily that I need the time of day, they just interest me.

I wonder how long clocks have been an essential part of our daily lives?

Well, now you know I like clocks and how it can make time a thing of beauty.
